Refrigerated Centrifuges

Every refrigerated model in the Ohaus Frontier range maintains -20 degC to 40 degC and now runs on R290, a natural refrigerant with a low Global Warming Potential, ahead of the EU F-gas Regulation 2024/573 and the US EPA SNAP phase-down of R452A. The range spans the FC5513R and FC5515R microcentrifuges up to the FC5918R, FC5720R, FC5816R, FC5830R, FC5916R, and FC5917RF multipurpose models, so whether you are keeping blood, plasma, enzymes, or RNA cold during a fast microtube spin or a large-volume run, there is a refrigerated Frontier model sized to it. Labman supplies the full refrigerated line-up for laboratories across Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

One temperature range, two centrifuge tiers

Refrigerated Frontier models are not a separate product line so much as a cooled version of an existing microcentrifuge or multipurpose centrifuge: the FC5513R and FC5515R are the refrigerated counterparts of the FC5513 and FC5515 microcentrifuges, while the FC5718R, FC5816R, FC5916R, and FC5917RF sit alongside their non-refrigerated equivalents in the multipurpose range. The FC5720R and FC5830R are refrigerated-only models, built specifically for higher speed and force. Every model in this category holds -20 degC to 40 degC in 1 degC increments.

R290 refrigerant and F-gas compliance

Ohaus has moved the whole Frontier refrigerated line-up to R290, a natural propane-based refrigerant with a low Global Warming Potential, ahead of the EU F-gas Regulation 2024/573 and the US EPA SNAP phase-down of high-GWP refrigerants such as R452A. The refrigeration circuit is hermetically sealed and complies with IEC 61010-2-011, the safety standard for laboratory equipment using flammable refrigerants, so switching to a more sustainable refrigerant does not come at the cost of operator safety.

Pre-cool and standstill cooling

Every refrigerated Frontier centrifuge pre-cools the rotor and chamber before a run starts, so temperature-sensitive samples are not exposed to a warm chamber at the beginning of a protocol. Several models, including the FC5513R, FC5515R, and the larger refrigerated multipurpose centrifuges, also add standstill cooling, keeping the chamber cold between runs rather than only while the rotor is spinning.

Built on Ohaus and Hermle engineering

Ohaus, which also owns the German centrifuge manufacturer Hermle Labortechnik, builds every refrigerated Frontier model with a lid-locking system, an imbalance sensor that stops the unit if a load becomes uneven, and microprocessor control with 99 program memories, so the safety and usability baseline matches the rest of the Frontier range even with the added refrigeration hardware.

Related centrifuge categories

Refrigerated centrifuges cut across the Ohaus Frontier range rather than forming a single product tier, so most models here also belong to a second category based on tube size and rotor type:

  • Laboratory Centrifuges for the full Ohaus Frontier range and a comparison of all four categories.
  • Microcentrifuges to see the FC5513R and FC5515R alongside their non-refrigerated FC5513 and FC5515 counterparts.
  • Multipurpose Centrifuges to see the FC5718R, FC5720R, FC5816R, FC5830R, FC5916R, and FC5917RF alongside the rest of the multipurpose range.
  • Mini Centrifuges if a quick, unrefrigerated microtube spin-down is all your protocol needs.

FAQ - Refrigerated Centrifuges

What temperature range do Ohaus Frontier refrigerated centrifuges cover?
Every refrigerated Frontier model, from the FC5513R microcentrifuge to the FC5917RF, holds -20 degC to 40 degC in 1 degC increments, and pre-cools the rotor and chamber before a run starts.
Why did Ohaus switch these centrifuges to R290 refrigerant?
R290 is a natural, propane-based refrigerant with a low Global Warming Potential. The switch keeps the Frontier range ahead of the EU F-gas Regulation 2024/573 and the US EPA SNAP phase-down of high-GWP refrigerants such as R452A. The refrigeration circuit is hermetically sealed and complies with IEC 61010-2-011, the safety standard for lab equipment using flammable refrigerants.
Is a refrigerated centrifuge safe to use with a flammable refrigerant like R290?
Yes. The refrigeration circuit is hermetically sealed and built to IEC 61010-2-011, which covers laboratory equipment using flammable refrigerants, so operators keep full protection even in the unlikely event of a rotor failure or ignition risk.
Do refrigerated Frontier centrifuges come with a rotor included?
Most ship without a rotor so you can match one to your tube size and volume; see each product page for the compatible rotor list, or contact Labman for advice.
