Microcentrifuges

The Ohaus Frontier microcentrifuge range covers 1.5/2.0 ml microtube work from routine molecular biology through to high-speed clinical protocols. The FC5513 family reaches up to 13,500 rpm and 17,317 x g, while the higher-throughput FC5515 family spins up to 15,200 rpm, 21,953 x g, and rotors as large as 44 x 1.5/2.0 ml. Both families are also available as refrigerated FC5513R and FC5515R models for temperature-sensitive samples. Labman supplies the full Ohaus Frontier microcentrifuge line-up for laboratories across Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

Built for high-speed microtube work

Every Frontier microcentrifuge is designed around the 1.5/2.0 ml microtube: a splash-proof touch-wheel interface lets you set speed or RCF, acceleration and deceleration, and run time without opening a menu tree, and a double-line backlit LCD shows both the set and actual parameters at a glance. Ten acceleration and deceleration profiles and 99 memory sets make it straightforward to store validated protocols and switch between them.

Rotor options beyond the standard microtube

Depending on the model, the range also takes an 18-position microtube rotor for smaller batches, a spin-column rotor, a hematocrit capillary rotor, and a PCR strip rotor, alongside a BIOSEAL rotor option for potentially infectious or biohazardous samples. This lets one centrifuge cover several protocols rather than dedicating a separate unit to each.

Refrigerated versions for sensitive samples

The FC5513R and FC5515R add refrigeration from -20 degC to 40 degC and pre-cool the rotor and chamber before a run, which matters for blood, plasma, enzymes, or RNA work where heat build-up during a long or fast spin can affect the sample. Both now run on R290, a natural low-GWP refrigerant, ahead of the EU F-gas Regulation 2024/573 and the US EPA SNAP phase-down of R452A.

Built on Ohaus and Hermle engineering

Ohaus, which also owns the German centrifuge manufacturer Hermle Labortechnik, builds these microcentrifuges with a splash-proof housing, a lid-locking system on the refrigerated models, and a rotor imbalance sensor that stops the unit if a load becomes uneven, so day-to-day operation stays safe without slowing down a busy bench.

Related centrifuge categories

Microcentrifuges are one of four categories in the Ohaus Frontier range. If a microtube protocol is not quite the right fit, one of these related categories might be:

  • Laboratory Centrifuges for the full Ohaus Frontier range and a comparison of all four categories.
  • Mini Centrifuges for a single fixed-speed microtube or PCR strip spin-down rather than a fully adjustable microcentrifuge.
  • Multipurpose Centrifuges for 15 ml to 1000 ml tubes, blood collection, and cell culture work that a microtube rotor cannot cover.
  • Refrigerated Centrifuges to see the FC5513R and FC5515R alongside the other refrigerated Frontier models.

FAQ - Microcentrifuges

What is the difference between the FC5513 and FC5515 microcentrifuge?
The FC5513 spins up to 13,500 rpm and 17,317 x g with a 24 x 1.5/2.0 ml rotor. The FC5515 reaches higher figures, up to 15,200 rpm and 21,953 x g, with rotor capacity up to 44 x 1.5/2.0 ml, so it suits larger batches or protocols that need more centrifugal force.
Do I need the refrigerated FC5513R or FC5515R instead of the standard model?
Choose the R model if your sample is temperature-sensitive, for example blood, plasma, enzymes, or RNA work. Both refrigerated models maintain -20 degC to 40 degC and pre-cool the rotor and chamber before a run, and now use R290, a natural low-GWP refrigerant.
Can these microcentrifuges handle biohazardous samples?
Yes. A BIOSEAL rotor option is available across the FC5513 and FC5515 family, sealing the rotor to contain aerosols if a tube fails during a run, so labs working with potentially infectious material are covered.
What rotors are available beyond the standard microtube rotor?
Depending on the model, the Frontier Micro range also supports spin columns, a PCR strip rotor, a hematocrit capillary rotor, and an 18-position microtube rotor for smaller batches. See each product page for the exact compatible list, or contact Labman for advice.
