Laboratory Centrifuges
The Ohaus Frontier range covers every centrifugation need in one lab, from the compact Frontier FC5306 mini centrifuge for a quick microtube spin-down to the high-capacity Frontier FC5917RF for 1000 ml swing-out rotors. Ohaus builds these centrifuges to the same engineering standard behind Hermle Labortechnik, the German centrifuge manufacturer it acquired, and Labman distributes the full line-up for laboratories across Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Four centrifuge families, one Frontier platform
The Ohaus Frontier series is split into four working categories on this site: mini, micro, multipurpose, and refrigerated. Ohaus itself groups the same line-up as Frontier Mini, Frontier Micro, Frontier Multi, and Frontier Multi Pro, with the Multi and Multi Pro ranges covering our multipurpose and refrigerated-multipurpose products respectively. Whichever way you look at it, the range spans a single mini centrifuge (Frontier FC5306) up to high-capacity refrigerated models that spin 4 x 1000 ml swing-out rotors (Frontier FC5917RF).
Built on Ohaus and Hermle engineering
Ohaus acquired Hermle Labortechnik, a German centrifuge manufacturer with decades of engineering experience, and the Frontier range reflects that background: chemical-resistant stainless steel rotor chambers on the multipurpose and refrigerated models, brushless induction motors, and automatic rotor recognition on the higher-throughput centrifuges. All models add microprocessor control, an imbalance switch-off, an emergency lid release, and an audible end-of-run signal as standard, so the safety baseline does not change as you move up or down the range.
Safety and usability across the range
Every Frontier centrifuge stores up to 99 programs, lets you preselect speed or RCF in increments of 10, and runs continuously or on a preset timer from 10 seconds to 99 hours 59 minutes. Motor-driven lid locks, BIOSEAL rotor options, and stainless steel chambers become available from the micro tier upward, so laboratories handling biohazardous or infectious samples are covered without moving to the largest models.
Choosing between the categories
Start from your sample: microtubes and PCR strips point to the mini or micro range, standard 15 ml and 50 ml tubes point to the multipurpose range, and blood bags or 1000 ml bottles point to the higher-capacity multipurpose models. If your protocol is temperature-sensitive, for example blood, plasma, enzymes, or RNA work, choose a refrigerated model; every refrigerated Frontier centrifuge now runs on R290, a natural low-GWP refrigerant, ahead of the EU F-gas Regulation 2024/573 and the US EPA SNAP phase-down of R452A.
Explore the Frontier centrifuge range by category
Every centrifuge on this page belongs to one of four categories, and most refrigerated models also appear in their non-refrigerated category since the underlying platform is the same. If you already know your sample volume and throughput, jump straight to the category that fits:
- Mini Centrifuges for a single quick microtube or PCR strip spin-down on a shared bench.
- Microcentrifuges for high-speed 1.5/2.0 ml microtube work in molecular biology and clinical labs.
- Multipurpose Centrifuges for 15 ml to 1000 ml tubes, blood collection, cell culture, and industrial or pharmaceutical QC.
- Refrigerated Centrifuges for any of the above workflows when your sample needs to stay cold during the run.
