Scientific Industries Genie Series

The Genie Series brings together the laboratory vortex mixers, bead beaters, rotators, and incubator-shakers originally developed by Scientific Industries and manufactured today under OHAUS. Since 1964, the Vortex-Genie has been the standard laboratory vortex mixer in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and clinical laboratories worldwide, and that same engineering now extends across the Disruptor Genie and Bead Genie for mechanical cell disruption, the Rotator Genie family for rotating and rocking, and the Incubator-Genie and Enviro-Genie for temperature-controlled agitation.

About the Genie Series

Scientific Industries, founded in 1954, designed the first Vortex-Genie mixer in 1964 and built it into one of the most recognized instrument names in laboratory sample mixing. Effective August 7, 2025, OHAUS acquired the Genie lab equipment portfolio, continuing the same engineering, manufacturing standards, and accessory ecosystem under the OHAUS lab equipment division.

Vortex Mixers: Vortex-Genie 2, 2T, Digital, Digital ABI, and Pulse

The Vortex-Genie 2 is the analog original, the Vortex-Genie 2T adds a programmable timer, the Digital Vortex-Genie 2 adds a digital display, the Digital Vortex-Genie 2 ABI is configured for Applied Biosystems microplate protocols, and the Vortex-Genie Pulse adds adjustable interval mixing. All accept the same ecosystem of more than 30 accessories, from microtube holders to 50 ml tube racks.

Cell Disruption: Disruptor Genie and Bead Genie

The Disruptor Genie and Digital Disruptor Genie combine vortex and disruption motion for glass-bead cell disruption of up to 12 microtubes at once. The Bead Genie is a compact, heavy-duty bead beater with a 19 mm reciprocating motion for lysing, extraction, and homogenization in space-limited biosafety cabinets or cold rooms.

Rotation and Rocking: The Rotator Genie Family

The Roto-Rock Genie, Rotator Genie, and Roto-Shake Genie cover end-over-end rotation, gentle rocking, and orbital shaking through a shared magnetic clip-plate platform system, suited to bead coating, immunoprecipitation, and gentle blood sample mixing.

Temperature-Controlled Agitation: Incubator-Genie and Enviro-Genie

The Incubator-Genie heats from 28 C to 75 C with rotation, rocking, and shaking in one chamber, while the Enviro-Genie adds Peltier cooling from 4 C, a programmable timer, integrated magnetic stirrers, and RS232 PC connectivity for more demanding microorganism and tissue culture protocols.

Who the Genie Series Suits

FAQ - Scientific Industries Genie Series

What is the Genie Series?
The Genie Series is the full range of laboratory vortex mixers, bead beaters, rotators, and incubator-shakers originally developed by Scientific Industries since 1954 and manufactured today under OHAUS, following OHAUS's acquisition of the Genie lab equipment portfolio in August 2025.
What is the difference between the Disruptor Genie and the Bead Genie?
The Disruptor Genie combines vortex and disruption motion for up to 12 microtubes at once and is built on the Vortex-Genie platform, while the Bead Genie uses a 19 mm reciprocating motion and a more compact housing, suited to labs with limited bench space such as biosafety cabinets or cold rooms.
Is the Vortex-Genie still made by Scientific Industries?
Scientific Industries designed and manufactured the Vortex-Genie since 1964. Effective August 7, 2025, OHAUS acquired the Genie lab equipment portfolio, and the Vortex-Genie and related instruments now continue under OHAUS with the same engineering and accessory ecosystem.
Which Genie instrument suits temperature-controlled cell culture?
The Incubator-Genie heats from 28 C to 75 C with rotation, rocking, and shaking, while the Enviro-Genie adds Peltier cooling from 4 C, a programmable timer, and PC connectivity for more demanding microorganism and tissue culture protocols.
