Roller Mixers

Roller mixers turn tubes and bottles on a set of rollers rather than shaking them, the gentlest form of mixing in Labman’s shaker range. The Edmund Buhler RM 2 handles any tube or vessel up to 80 mm in diameter on 6 removable rollers, with an optional overhead rack that converts the same unit to vertical rotation mixing. It suits applications where even a slow rocking motion generates too much foam or agitation.

Rolling versus shaking

A roller mixer does not shake the sample at all. Instead, tubes or bottles rest on a set of rotating rollers and turn continuously, combined with a slight tilt, which resuspends contents without the foam or shear that even a gentle rocking or shaking motion can introduce. This makes it the preferred choice for applications where foam formation specifically needs to be avoided, such as blood tube mixing.

The Buhler RM 2

The Buhler RM 2 is fitted with 6 removable plastic rollers, each 300 mm long and 32 mm in diameter, that accept any standard tube, flask, or vessel up to 80 mm in diameter. Speed runs from 5 to 80 rpm, with a fixed 3-degree tilt, and a removable spill tray underneath makes cleaning easy after any spillage. An optional overhead rack, fitted with 12 holes, turns the same unit into a vertical rotation (overhead) mixing system for applications that call for that motion instead.

Who chooses a roller mixer

This category suits hematology labs mixing blood tubes, cell culture work sensitive to foam formation, and any application needing the gentlest possible resuspension without shear. It is a common companion to orbital or reciprocating shakers already used for general flask work, added specifically for the subset of samples that need rolling rather than shaking.

FAQ - Roller Mixers

What is a roller mixer used for?
A roller mixer gently resuspends tubes and bottles by rolling rather than shaking them, avoiding the foam that shaking can introduce. It is commonly used for blood tube mixing, cell cultures, and any sample sensitive to shear or foam.
What is the maximum vessel size for the Buhler RM 2?
The RM 2 accepts any standard tube, flask, or vessel up to 80 mm in diameter, held on 6 removable plastic rollers, each 300 mm long.
Can a roller mixer be used for vertical rotation instead of rolling?
Yes. The Buhler RM 2 accepts an optional overhead rack with 12 holes, which converts the same unit into a vertical rotation (overhead) mixing system for protocols that call for that motion.
