Erlab Captair 481 Smart – Large-Format Ductless Fume Hood for High-Precision and Energy-Efficient Laboratories
The Erlab Captair 481 Smart is the largest oblong-opening model in Erlab’s ductless fume hood portfolio, providing an expansive 1,200 mm workspace while retaining the compact footprint and low-energy philosophy that define the Captair Smart range.
Its distinctive oblong sash with two hand openings limits the impact of ambient air disturbances on containment performance, improving operator protection during delicate manipulations. This geometry also allows the hood to operate with one configurable filtration column, keeping purchase and lifetime running costs lower than multi-stack systems of comparable width.
Unlike ducted fume hoods that continuously exhaust conditioned air outside the building, the Captair 481 Smart captures contaminants at source and filters them through activated carbon media for chemical vapours and HEPA or ULPA filters for particulates before safely recirculating purified air into the laboratory. This design dramatically reduces HVAC load, eliminates outdoor emissions and supports sustainable laboratory operation.
For powder handling, this filtration strategy provides a crucial advantage: particles are trapped immediately rather than accumulating inside long exhaust ducts. Combined with extremely stable airflow — unaffected by external pressure variations — the hood is ideally suited for precision weighing down to semi-micro level (0.01 mg), pharmaceutical API preparation and toxic solids manipulation.
Certified to AFNOR NF X 15-211, DIN 12 927, BS 7989 and EN 1822, the Captair 481 Smart integrates Erlab’s Smart Technology, which communicates safety status via intuitive light and sound signals while continuously monitoring airflow, temperature and humidity.
Installation remains highly flexible: the hood can be placed on an existing laboratory bench or mounted on a fixed or mobile Erlab support stand, making it easy to integrate into new builds, refurbishments or rental laboratories.
